History of VSC

Virginia Stage Company is the region’s only fully professional resident theater company, serving an audience of over 90,000 annually. Originally founded as The Norfolk Theatre Center in 1968, the Company changed its name to Virginia Stage Company and took on its present form in 1979. VSC’s mission is to "enrich, educate and entertain the region by creating and producing theatrical art of the highest quality and worthy of national prominence."

As a non-profit cultural institution, VSC is an artistically driven theater company, rather than a commercial venture. Contributions from individuals, corporations, foundations and government agencies enable VSC to keep ticket prices affordable for all citizens of the Hampton Roads community while sustaining the highest artistic integrity. Virginia Stage Company provides a variety of services and programs to our community, including American Sign Language performances and infrared hearing devices for patrons with hearing difficulties. Virginia Stage Company’s Education and Outreach Department provides Student Matinee performances of main-stage productions as well as In-School Touring productions to over 42,000 Hampton Roads students annually. VSC also participates as a Partner in Education with several schools by providing services such as performances, drama classes, production training and workshops to Title One schools.

Virginia Stage Company has earned a reputation as one of the country’s foremost regional theaters, attracting the nation’s leading artists to the Wells Theatre stage. The Tony Award-winning musical, The Secret Garden, began its life at VSC, and our award-winning directors, designers and actors work in other theaters across the country as well as on Broadway, Off-Broadway, in film and television. VSC also employs professional artisans, technicians and administrators who conceive, design, rehearse and build each production specifically for our audiences in Hampton Roads. These theater professionals come to VSC from all over the country and become vital members of the Hampton Roads community.

In the years since its founding, Virginia Stage Company has made significant contributions to the quality of life in Hampton Roads, including presenting more than 185 plays through over 3,700 performances and saving, refurbishing and revitalizing the historic Wells Theatre. These performances have drawn over 2 million patrons to downtown and have been an anchor the City of Norfolk was able to build around for its successful renaissance of Downtown Norfolk and the re-energized Granby District. The Wells Theatre serves as the Company’s performance home and for the benefit of other local cultural arts organizations and helps to preserve the legacy of live theater for future generations.

We invite you to join our family of over 1,300 donors who contribute annually to Virginia Stage Company so that we can continue to provide these valuable services to our community. Tax-deductible contributions can be mailed to: Virginia Stage Company, PO Box 3770, Norfolk, VA 23514.
